      Civil War Moves West

The Battle of Wilson's Creek marked the beginning of the Civil War in Missouri. The battle fought here on August 10, 1861, was the first major engagement west of the Mississippi River. And it set the stage for the Battle of Pea Ridge in March 1862. Wilson's Creek was also where the first Union general, Nathaniel Lyon, met his death.

      On the Main Road

This bridge, crossing Wilson's Creek about ten miles southwest of Springfield, is located on what was one of the main roads in Southwest Missouri before and during the time of the Civil War. With the exception of the vegetation, the 1,750-acre battlefield has changed little from its historic setting. The fall colors had just begun to appear in the lush green setting as we enjoyed the mid-October day.

      Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers.
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
      Whatever he does prospers.
