      The Perfect Storm

Last week our family spent a few days with friends in the Breckenridge, Colorado area for skiing, shopping, and sightseeing. While we were there, the area experienced the perfect storm, recording the largest snowfall for the last six years. Breckenridge only had a couple of feet of snow, while much heavier amounts fell further east in and around the Denver area. On the first morning, Brenda and I ventured out. The roads were passable so we drove several miles to the Silverthorne Factory Outlet Mall to check out bargains at the Big Dogs Outlet.

The mall is in a beautiful area. Mountain peaks rise up on all sides and a mountain stream flows along the edge. At one point, the steam separates one section of shops from the rest of the mall. While crossing the bridge to these shops, we saw them - two moose, a mother and her son, were standing in the stream. Later we heard on the news that they had wondered in and had not been able to find their way out. They didn't seem to be too upset and didn't pay much attention to the people making the most of this Kodak moment.

      Lost Without a Clue

I can only imagine what they were thinking. Perhaps the mom turned to the son and said, "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore, Toto." I wonder if they even knew that they were lost. Did they realize the danger they faced if they ventured onto the highway just a block or so away?
