Seen on a Motel Sign in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Images in My Mind
There it was - in bold print. It must be true. I looked at the
marquee sign again. Sure enough, I had not misread the words.
There for everyone passing by on I-40 to see was the message,
"Welcome Oklahoma Baptist Women's Convention Barrel Races."
Images began to pass through my mind.
Now before I go on, let me assure you that I have nothing
against Baptist women, especially from Oklahoma. I am
acquainted with several, and they are no different than the
non-Baptist variety. And I have nothing against barrel racing.
It is a fine sport and those involved have great athletic abilities.
Besides, they wear nice hats.
I was intrigued by the possibilities of such a convention. Would
they hold seminars on the various aspects of the sport? Would
there be demonstrations? Was it open to all Baptist women, or
was it restricted to Baptist cowgirls only?
Speak Clearly
I was reminded that we often have trouble saying what we mean.
I'm sure that the person who put the words on the marquee
wanted to welcome two different groups - Baptist women and
Barrel Racers. But instead, his words said something completely
different. At least to me.
We should strive to not only clearly say what we mean; but to also clearly
listen to what others are saying. The greatest communicator of all time said,
