Leave No Man Behind
On October 3, 1993, Army Rangers and members of the elite Delta Force
participated in the siege of the Somalian city of Mogadishu. The covert
operation was designed to capture two key lieutenants of vicious Somali
warlord, Muhammad Farrah Aidid. What should have been a 45-minute mission
went horribly wrong and turned into a 16-hour ordeal of bloody urban
warfare. The soldiers found themselves surrounded by armed Aidid
supporters. Rocket-propelled grenades downed two Black Hawk helicopters
and soldiers were forced to fend for themselves in the battle-torn streets.
The loss of 18 soldiers turned American opinion against further involvement
in Somalia. But accounts of the incident make it clear that the men
involved were undeniably heroic.
