      Forever Young

Harrison Ford and Mel Gibson are on my short list of favorite Hollywood actors. Last night we watched Mel in the 1992 movie Forever Young. He plays the leading role of a 1939 test pilot whose childhood sweetheart is injured in a tragic automobile accident that leaves her comatose. Grief-stricken and depressed, he volunteers to be frozen alive for a year by his best friend, a scientist in a top-secret cryogenics experiment. He figures he has nothing to lose and can forego the agony of the inevitable death of the girl - or perhaps she will awaken while HE is asleep. But, because of the untimely death of his friend and the beginning of war, his body remains in a deep freeze until 1992 when two boys accidentally revive him.

      Plot Leaves You Wanting More

Well, you get the idea and can probably imagine where the movie script is going. I won't give away any more of the story in case you have an urge to find the video or a listing in your local TV guide. The movie is a little melodramatic and some problems with the plot leave you wanting more. It's main success at the box office was because of who was in it. I have not seen a similar movie, Late For Dinner, that was released at about the same time; but have read that it is a far better variation on the same theme. It just lacks the big names.

      Lemonade Anyone?

This really didn't start out as a movie review; and I have strayed from my original thoughts. Even though the movie had a happy ending, I was left with some questions. What would have happened if Mel's character had not taken the easy way out? What impact could he have made during the fifty years that he opted out of reality? What did he miss? Brenda made the statement that those were just years lost.

Life does hand out lemons - often more than we think we can take. It would be so easy to just stick our heads in the sand and let life pass by. But you already know what they say when life hands you a lemon. Have you set up your lemonade stand yet? We need to squeeze all we can out of life, forget about the bitterness, and enjoy the sweet taste that CAN be found.
