      What Were They Thinking

      The patent office has never come knocking at my door; but I've often seen some new thingamajig and said, "I wish I'd thought of that." The use of simple logic has led to many discoveries and inventions throughout history - like the wheel and fire. Other findings have come only after years of study and countless calculations - like the automobile and cures for certain diseases. Still others leave you wondering, "What were they thinking?" image of A Cricket

      Cricket Temperature

      Recently, a local TV meteorologist presented some interesting information. Air temperature in degrees Fahrenheit is equal to the number of cricket chirps in 15 seconds plus 40. Now I can see someone observing a round stone and deciding that it would make moving heavy objects easier. And I can see how someone would spend years to find a cure for cancer. But what about cricket chirps related to air temperature?

      Maybe it was just a couple of guys setting around a campfire one evening, a little bored and nothing else to talk about. One of them leaned closer to the fire and said, "Hey, let's count the number of times that cricket chirps in 15 seconds." "Yeah!" said the other, "And let's see if we can use that to figure out the air temperature."

      Makes You Wonder

      Sort of makes you wonder what the great minds of the world are really thinking. Where does your mind travel? What great mysteries are you trying to solve? The writer of the Bible book of Philippians said, "Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things." The next time you hear a cricket chirping, you can amaze everyone around you by determining the correct air temperature. And just maybe, you will be reminded of the great potential that you have to find the answers to some of life's mysteries. It's your choice.
