      The End is Near

One day, a priest and a pastor were standing by the side of the road pounding a sign into the ground. The sign read, "The End Is Near! Turn yourself around before it's too late!" As a driver sped by, he yelled, "Leave me alone you religious fanatics!" Moments later, screeching tires followed by a big splash were heard. The pastor turned to the priest and observed, "Maybe the sign should just say 'Bridge Out'."

Some are obvious in their meaning, "Warning: The Surgeon General has determined that smoking is dangerous to your health." Some are redundant, "Caution: Water on Road During Rain." Others are a little confusing, "Emergency Phone: 150 Miles Ahead" or "Parking for Drive-Thru Service Only."

      Under Penalty of Law

image of No Dogs Allowed sign Warning signs are often ignored. At times the warning isn't taken seriously. I have to confess that I am guilty of Mattress Tag Removal. I imagine the Mattress Tag Police will be breaking down the door any day now. Other times, the offender thinks the warning applies only to others. The "Road Closed" and the "No Baby Strollers on Escalator" are only suggestions meant for someone else.

Warning signs are just that, warnings! They come in many forms - lights, signs, labels, even physical symptoms of life-threatening disease. Remember the B-9 Robot from Lost in Space, "Warning! Will Robinson. Danger, Danger!" Warnings are designed to alert us to approaching danger. If they are ignored, disaster is inevitable. It may only be a minor catastrophe like a life-long fear of the Mattress Tag Police. Or it could be major, like a heart attack or cancer. There is one warning that will result in eternal tragedy if ignored. The author of the Bible book of Proverbs put it like this, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death." Learn more.
