      Trusty Indian Scout

I recently read a story about an old west fort that was about to be attacked by Indians. The cunning old General called for his trusty Indian Scout. "You must use all your skills," the General ordered, "to determine the sort of enemy we are up against." The Scout knelt down, put his ear to the ground, and reported, "Very large war party, maybe three hundred warriors, four Chiefs, two on palomino stallions, two on black stallions. All have war paint . . . many, many guns. Hmmm, the Medicine Man is also with them." Stunned by the report, the General exclaimed, "Good night! You can tell all of that just by listening to the ground?" "No, Sir," answered the Scout, "I can see under the gate."

      Clear as Mud

This story may not be an actual historical account, but it certainly describes the reaction that difficult situations sometimes induce. Experts are called, committees are formed, and polls are taken. The problem is looked at from every angle. But the answer is still unclear. An old friend of mine used to become perplexed in the midst of trying to explain something. He would stop and say, "Well, that's as clear as mud!"

Sometimes the answer is not seen because we spend all of our time looking at the problem instead of looking for the solution. We need to simply get down and look under the gate. Often, the answer is "as plain as the nose on your face" or "if it was a snake, it would have bitten you." Difficult situations can and will come into our lives. But answers can be found.
