      Set it Free

With Valentine's Day near, love is in the air. But how do you know if you have found true love? Try this simple test:

If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it was, and always will be yours. If it never returns, it was never yours to begin with. If it just sits in your living room, messes up your stuff, eats your food, uses your telephone, takes your money, and never behaves as if you actually set it free in the first place, you either married it or it's a teenager!

      Looking for Love

It seems that everyone is looking for love today . . . often in all the wrong places. And more often, the love that is found is not the true love that really matters. Sir James M. Barrie said of love, "If you have it, you don't need to have anything else, and if you don't have it, it doesn't matter much what else you have.

Of course, Lucy Van Pelt clarifies this need for true love, "All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt!"

Margery Williams described true love in a discourse between two of the characters in The Velveteen Rabbit.

"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real."

"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit. "Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt."

"Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?" "It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in your joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

      Find True Love

Long after the valentines have been forgotten, after the flowers have faded away, and after the chocolate has been eaten . . . true love, the love that really matters, will remain.

The Bible book of First Corinthians describes true love as, "patient and kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails."

Are you looking for this kind of love? It's not a fairy tale or something that can only be obtained by someone else. You too, can find this unconditional love. Learn more.
