      The Price of Freedom

Today is Veterans Day, a day set aside to honor those brave men and women, past and present, who chose to offer themselves to preserve the freedom that we have in the United State of America. Some made the ultimate sacrifice in doing so. American Author, Charles M. Province wrote the following words honoring these American patriots:

It is the soldier, not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the soldier, who salutes the flag,
        Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

      War Stories

I am thankful to family, friends, and strangers who have made our freedom possible. Since the first battle for our country's freedom, millions of stories have been shared, others forgotten - or at least pushed into the dark hidden corners of a soldier's mind. Some are stories of heroism, others tell the beginning of lifelong friendships. Still others share the lighter side of military life.

For those who have been in the middle of combat, certain points go without saying. For the rest of us, they may not be as obvious. On the lighter side, following are a few lessons learned:

When the pin is pulled, Mr. Grenade is not our friend. -U.S. Marine Corps

If you see a bomb technician running, try to keep up with him. -U.S.A.F. Ammo

Aim towards the Enemy. -Instructions Printed on US Rocket Launcher

A slipping gear could let your M203 grenade launcher fire when you least expect it. That would make you quite unpopular in what's left of your unit. -Army's Magazine of Preventive Maintenance

Try to look unimportant; they may be low on ammo. -Infantry Journal

It is generally inadvisable to eject directly over the area you just bombed. -U.S. Air Force Manual

Cluster bombing from B-52s is very, very accurate. The bombs are guaranteed to always hit the ground. -U.S.A.F. Ammo Troop

Never tell the Platoon Sergeant you have nothing to do. -Unknown Marine Recruit

Any ship can be a minesweeper . . . once. -Unknown

Don't draw fire; it irritates the people around you. -Your Buddies

      The Best War Story

My dad served in WWII, but never talked about his war stories. Although Caleb and I are members of the Civil Air Patrol, I was never in military service, so I don't have my own stories to share. But there is one war story that I can share - one that has been repeated since the beginning of time. It tells of a global war and of one willing to lay down his life to bring freedom to those who are held captive. Learn more.
