At Least My Dog Loves Me

Rev. Warren J. Keating, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Yuma, Arizona, says that the best prayer he ever heard was, "Lord, please make me the kind of person my dog thinks I am."

As I mentioned in a previous writing, we currently have four dogs. Every time I go into the back yard, I am eagerly greeted by at least three of them. The only reason that Charlie may not respond is because he is a little hard-of-hearing and a very sound sleeper. I may have to call for him several times or even go over and shake him before he realizes that I am anywhere image of Ginger - Yes, one eye is half blue and half brown. - Photo by Steve Klusmeyer (Click to enlarge) around. But as soon as I have his attention, he is as glad to see me as the others.

What is it that they see in me? Why do they jump joyfully at me, yet bark uncontrollably at the meter-reader or any other stranger who ventures over the fence? Why do they love me so much?

      It's Their Nature

Dogs can't help it. It's their nature. People are often compared to dogs. One might work like a dog, be as faithful as a Golden Retriever, or be as tenacious as a Bulldog. What if dogs made a list of their owner's qualities? I would hope that our dogs would observe the following:

      • Dependable ~ I will be there for them. They can depend on me for their needs.
      • Support ~ I will offer praise, even for small things. I will say "Good Dog" often.
      • Trainer ~ I will teach them the right things to do. I will discipline them when needed. image of Rusty - Photo by Steve Klusmeyer (Click to enlarge)
      • Loving ~ I will give them a pat on the head. I will scratch behind an ear. I will rub a tummy.
      • Friendship ~ I will just have fun with them. I will throw the ball one more time.

The list is endless, and you have probably thought of some of your own. What do dogs see in you? Are you really the kind of person they think you are? More importantly, what do other people see in you? We would all do well to live up to the image that our dogs see.

      Is Change Possible?
