We Live In a Zoo!
It didn't take long for us to realize that Caleb would be an only child after his birth
12 years ago. (Details of that revelation may show up in another story at a later time.)
What we didn't realize was that his wouldn't be the only life to become a part of our family.
At the time of this writing, we have five lizards, four dogs, one cat, one parakeet, and an
assortment of fish. That doesn't include the three to four dozen crickets that visit the lizards
each week, though they usually don't hang around for long. Snakes, frogs, hamsters, hermit crabs, and
webworms have all taken up residence in our home at some time in the past. We actually have
fewer animals now than we had a couple of years ago.

Dogs Are My Favorite
Brenda and I have always had a soft spot for animals, especially dogs, so this zoo isn't
entirely Caleb's fault. I have noticed one thing about animals - they each have there own personality.
Even
(our bearded dragon) has an attitude all her own.
are my favorite. Their outlook is always optimistic. Nothing seems to upset them. They are always
glad to see you. They ask, "What can I do for you?"
Cats Grow On You
We have always been dog people. Cats were never high on our list. But they do grow on you.
Molly joined our family about a year ago. She, too, has her own personality; and it's definitely
not the same as a dog's. She demands, "What are you going to do for me?" I am just thankful that
she has allowed us to remain in her house. She will sit in our laps . . . as long as it's her idea.
Sometimes she will meet us at the door; but just as often, she might not show herself until hours later.
She waits for us to turn the light on because she doesn't like to eat in the dark. She is content to
lie for hours in the same spot, often
- they like to stare at each other through the screen. We made the mistake a few days ago of sitting a
chair by the back door so she could watch birds out the window. Now she gazes longingly at the door
until we move the chair into place. I still haven't gotten used to her playful bites. They seem to
come when least expected. She's sitting there calmly being rubbed, when all at once, she attacks.
It's as if she's saying, "That feels so-o-o-o good; but I'm still in control of what's going on here."
I Did It My Way!
Right now, Molly is curled up in the chair behind me. She looks so cute and loving. But I know she
is making her own plans, setting her own agenda.
is her theme song. Often we go through life singing this same tune. We want to do it our way. We want
to be in control. We remind those around us that we're calling the shots. But pressure and worry come,
and we wonder how we are going to make it through. We grow tired and weary. There is a better way.
There is someone that we can lean on. God offers a timeless call to all who will answer.
