      Colors Cry Out

Brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow highlighted the vibrant green landscape of southwestern Missouri. The afternoon rain brought extra vibrancy to the scene. Soon, no more than memories would remain, leaving in their place the ordinary browns and grays of winter. But for now, each color seemed to cry out - seeking to be heard by any passing this way.

      Closer Look

As I looked closer, each tree seemed to take on a personality of its own. Some had completely turned to bright shades of red. Others were given orange or yellow. Several had only begun to change, with splotches of fall color amidst the summer green branches. A few had already lost their brilliance and had even turned loose of their now lifeless leaves.

      Not All the Same

I began to think of the similarity to those who have given control of their lives to God. In the New Testament, Peter tells us, "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18)." He also says, "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good (1 Peter 2:2-3)." And Paul instructs us to "let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind (Romans 12:2 TEV)." When we ask Jesus to forgive us of our sins and to be the Lord of our life, we begin to change. For some, those changes are obvious and happen quickly - like the conversion of Saul in the book of Acts, chapter 9. For others, the changes may not be as obvious and may take more time. How boring if all of the leaves changed to the exact same shade of red all at the same time - or even if all of the green leaves were exactly the same. The mixture of the different colors and shades is why the colors of fall are so beautiful to us.

      Look Through His Eyes

Begin to look through God's eyes. Catch a glimpse of those just beginning the changes God has planned for them. See others who have worn their bright colors for some time now. And even notice those whose colors may have faded a little over the years. Don't become too attached to your own colors. God is still working with you. You cannot imagine what brilliant colors still remain on His palette.
