Your Wish Is My Command
There's a story about a woman who picked up an old bottle while
she was walking along the beach. As she continued along the beach,
she began rubbing it unconsciously. Lo-and-behold a Genie emerged
from the bottle. The amazed woman quickly asked if she was
entitled to three wishes. The Genie replied, "Nope, sorry three-wish
genies are only in fairy-tales. I'm a one-wish genie. So, what'll it be?"
Without hesitating, she said, "I want peace in the Middle East. I
want those countries to stop fighting with each other. I want all
the Arabs to love Jews and Americans and vice-versa. Then there
will be world peace and harmony."
The Genie exclaimed, "Lady, be reasonable. Those countries have
been at war for thousands of years. Besides, I'm out of shape
after being stuck in that bottle for five hundred years. I'm good
but not THAT good! I don't think it can be done. Just make
another wish that's more reasonable."
After thinking for a minute the woman said, "Well, I've never been
able to find the right man. You know, one that's considerate and fun,
likes to cook and helps with the house cleaning, gets along with my
family, doesn't watch sports all the time, and is faithful. That's my
wish - a good man."
The Genie let out a long sigh, shook his head, and said, "What were
the names of those countries?"
Looking For a Few Good Men
Sometimes good men (and women) are hard to find. Qualities that
were once admired and expected are now unpopular and even
detested. It's just accepted that good guys will finish last.
My son Caleb and I have been involved in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP)
Cadet program for the past few months. CAP has a set of core
values for their members to live by: Integrity, Volunteer Service,
Excellence, and Respect. These core values have been set to guide
the conduct of members in the performance of vital public
service. But more importantly, adhering to these or similar values
enriches not only the members, but also those whom they interact
with on a daily basis.
What are your core values? What is your behavior guided by?
Are your life and the lives of those around you being enhanced?
You can become a man (or woman) of character. Learn how.
