I recently read this story in the New York Times by Gilbert L. Rogin:

Near St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City I noticed two firefighters standing at the door of their ambulance. The window was partly down, and they were talking to a small child inside, instructing her how to open the latch. Nearby, a young mother looked on impatiently. image of Ambulance

Assuming they had invited the curious girl into the ambulance to check it out and she'd locked the doors by mistake, I said, "She locked herself in, eh?"

"No, we locked ourselves out," one of the men said. "We borrowed her from her mom because she fit through the back window."

This reminded me of when my son, Matt, was 3 years old. We came home one afternoon and discovered that I had locked us out of the house. After checking the back door and all of the windows, I finally found a small window open in the bathroom shower. It was an old crank window and with enough tugging, I got it about half way open. I knew I couldn't fit through the window but Matt was just the right size. After explaining to him what to do, I picked him up under his arms and lowered him through the window as far as I could reach. Then, I dropped him onto the floor of the shower. (For those DHS workers in the audience, he landed on his feet and has grown to be a well-adjusted adult, considering he had me for a parent.) Anyway, after making it into the house, Matt ran around to the front door, unlocked it and let me in.

He was so excited about our breaking and entering caper he couldn't stop talking about it. It made me realize that God always sends you someone when you need him or her the most. Sometimes it's a grocery sacker who tells you a funny story when he's taking your groceries to the car. Sometimes it's a bird that keeps singing at the top of his lungs until you notice, and sometimes it's a child who is just the right size to fit through a window.
